In memoriam

César Fernández Carrasco
(1937 - 2026)

We regret to announce that César Fernández Carrasco passed away on 17 August
2026.
In the 1970s, César Fernández C. was a professor of mathematics at the
“Universidad Técnica del Estado” in Santiago, Chile.
Having been found in a lecture theatre whilst giving a lecture on the day of
the coup (11 September 1973), he was held prisoner in the Stadium for a
month.

Consequently, he was not permitted to find work in Chile and therefore moved
to Germany, where he spent his exile as a researcher at the GMD Institute in
St. Augustin, headed by Carl Adam Petri.

On his return to Chile, he was a full professor at the ‘Universidad de
Santiago de Chile’ (USACH), where he served as Deputy Director of the
three-year degree programme from its establishment in 1993 until 2003, whilst
also teaching the subject of Mathematical Thinking.
César Fernández made a significant contribution to the development of Petri
net theory and, in particular, to the theory and study of non-sequential
processes and their properties.

Those who knew César Fernández will surely remember his gentle and witty
manner, as well as his splendid, precise and instructive talks.
